FMF KTM Factory Racing Team Commands Championship Points Lead With Two Rounds Remaining in the AMA National Enduro Series
Round 7 – AMA National Enduro Series – August 28, 2016
CHANDLERSVILLE, Ohio – The FMF KTM Factory Racing Team had a successful day of racing on Sunday for Round 7 of the AMA National Enduro Series in Ohio. Overall points leader Russell Bobbitt gained valuable traction toward his championship lead with a 2nd place finish in the Pro Class, while Kacy Martinez reclaimed the Women’s A/B championship lead with a solid 2nd place finish in her first race back from a wrist injury.
The Grassman National Enduro presented dry and dusty track conditions amidst the hot and humid temperatures, which added an additional element of difficulty for the competitors. Four-Time AMA National Enduro Champion Russell Bobbitt was focused and ready for the challenge as he put his KTM 250 XC-F out front right away with the first test-win of the day over KTM-mounted rider Jesse Groemm.
In test two, Bobbitt struggled to keep his momentum going after running over a piece of barbed-wire fencing that remained tangled in his bike for the duration of the test, where he ultimately finished 6th in that test. The Georgia native quickly bounced back to claim another test-win in the third section, followed by a 3rd place finish in test four and 5th place in test five. Bobbitt experienced his only crash of the day during the sixth and final test, where he was still able to salvage a 4th place finish.
Bobbitt’s consistency paid off as he earned 2nd overall at Round 5, thus extending his points lead to 21 points over Grant Baylor with two rounds remaining in the series.
“Today went pretty well – I managed a couple test-wins, led the race several times throughout the day and only hit the ground once in the final test,” Bobbitt said. “The conditions were super dry, which left us trailing through silt ruts and dust clouds but my bike worked really well with me today and the reaction was still pretty good. The track had tons of off-camber trails that kept us on our toes and left little room for error. I’m happy to extend the points lead with two rounds remaining in the season.”
KTM-mounted rider Jesse Groemm put forth a solid ride to capture 4th overall, where he maintained top-seven finishes throughout the day. SRT/KTM rider Cory Buttrick earned a top-five overall finish after a consistent string of top-ten finishes throughout the day.
SRT/KTM rider Steward Baylor Jr. put his KTM 450 XC-F in contention for an overall podium as he entered the final test of the day with a string of top-three finishes behind him. However, Baylor got lost during the final test and accidentally cut the course. As a result, the 2012 AMA National Enduro Champion received a penalty that dropped him back to 6th overall for the day.
FMF KTM Factory Racing’s Kacy Martinez returned to racing on Sunday for the first time since June, when she sustainined a wrist injury at the Snowshoe GNCC. With minimal practice time leading up to the race, Martinez proved to not miss a beat as she maintained a competitive effort against Round 5 race-winner Sarah Baldwin.
With one test-win behind her, Martinez came into the fifth and final test with a chance at overall victory. Martinez put forth a hard-fought effort to come within 10 seconds of the race-winner, where she ultimately finished 2nd overall for the day in the Women’s A/B Class. Despite missing the previous round due to her wrist injury, the defending AMA National Enduro Champion was still able to reclaim the points lead with her podium finish at Round 7.
“It’s good to be back racing after being off the bike for so long,” Martinez said. “I had a lot of fun racing with Sarah Baldwin and I felt like I was making improvements all day. I’m going to continue to work on strengthening my wrist so we can fight to keep the points lead through the last two rounds of the season.”
