KTM Riders Finish 2-3 at Round 2 of the AMA National Enduro Series

Round 2 – AMA National Enduro Series – March 20, 2017

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Round 2 of the 2017 AMA National Enduro Series took place on Sunday just outside the confines of Daytona’s Bike Week festivities and it was a chaotic day of racing due to some course marking issues throughout the sandy terrain. Despite the issues, KTM-Support riders Steward Baylor Jr. and Cory Buttrick landed atop the overall podium, while FMF KTM Factory Racing Team’s Kailub Russell salvaged a 6th place finish after overcoming a few minor setbacks throughout the day.

Baylor captured the first test-win of the day aboard his KTM 350 XC-F, with Buttrick and KTM-mounted rider Jesse Groemm close in tow. Russell, however, began the day on the wrong foot as he got lost due to course marking issues. As a result, Russell finished 7th on the opening test. The 2015 AMA National Enduro Champion bounced back in test two, claiming the test-win as he entered the third test with good momentum – ultimately putting his KTM 250 XC-F into the 2nd place position just behind Steward Baylor.

Baylor and Russell once again grabbed top-three finishes in test four, where they were able to put themselves into favorable 1-2 overall positions heading into the final test of the day. Baylor and Russell were able to finish inside the top five in the sixth and final test but it wasn’t enough to keep their top positions as it was announced at the end of the day that test three would be thrown away due to many riders getting lost on the trail. As a result, Russell moved outside the top five and Baylor dropped a position in the overall running.

With the removal of test three, SRT/KTM’s Steward Baylor finished 2nd for the day, followed by his teammate Buttrick rounding out the podium in 3rd. Solid Performance KTM’s Groemm finished 4th and Kailub Russell secured 6th for the day.

FMF KTM Factory Racing Team Manager, Antti Kallonen: “The time and effort that we put in is frustrating when seeing that Kailub and Steward would have gone 1-2 and then at the end of the day test three gets thrown out and they drop drastically. It’s frustrating to think that could be the deciding factor on the entire championship series but nevertheless, we will regroup and come back stronger at the next round.”

Five-time reigning AMA National Enduro Champion Russell Bobbitt had a tough day of racing as he finished 10th overall at Round 2.
